Feminist foreign policy can be defined as a country leveraging all aspects of its foreign policy and international relations to advance a more equitable world. And while the word “feminist” appears in the name, a feminist foreign policy doesn’t exclusively focus on women and girls. Instead, the definition of feminist foreign policy that we promote represents a more comprehensive or intersectional approach to feminism, which prioritizes peace and gender equality, while seeking to combat colonial, racist, patriarchal and male-dominated power structures.

Conflict. COVID-19. Climate change. The challenges of today are increasingly urgent and the burden for addressing these challenges is shared across the globe. Progress in solving them will continue to be slow without collective action to implement comprehensive policies that get to the root causes of inequality. By adopting and implementing a feminist approach to foreign policy, governments can more intentionally center equality and rights throughout their work and can more effectively measure its impact.

We believe that by adopting and implementing feminist foreign policies, governments will advance agendas that will not only improve the lives of women, girls and structurally excluded communities, but contribute to a future that is more peaceful, sustainable and equitable for all.

The priority of the Collaborative is to advance the growing field of feminist foreign policy by bringing together leading experts, activists and officials working each day to craft bolder, more ambitious and more effective foreign policy solutions that result in progress for people, peace and planet. We believe that partnering with like-minded individuals, organizations and institutions is critical to advancing progress in this realm. We work with others pushing for this agenda both formally, as part of our Global Partner Network and our U.S. Coalition, and informally, through conversations and shared learning.

The Collaborative works in a secretariat capacity, supporting the work of two coalitions: the Global Partner Network for Feminist Foreign Policy and the Coalition for a Feminist Foreign Policy in the United States.
